Known as the Calypso orchid or Venus’s slipper grows in sheltered areas with little competition and is considered vulnerable to extirpation or extinction. They are highly susceptible to the slightest disturbances and are threatened by logging and overabundant deer. They occur in Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska, and British Columbia. They depend on bumblebees for pollination and require a specific soil fungi. The genus Calypso is named for the beautiful sea nymph in Homer’s Odyssey.
